1809: from Classicism to Romanticism: the Music of Haydn and Mendelssohn

Saturday, November 21, 7:30 PM –Strawbridge United Methodist Church, 5629 Kingwood Drive at Willow Terrace, Kingwood. 1809 is the year Franz Josef Haydn, the father of musical Classicism, died after a long and fruitful life. It is also the year Felix Mendelssohn, one of the giants of early Romanticism in music was born. The concert will share excerpts from several of these composers’ most famous choral and orchestral works to highlight the stylistic differences. Haydn’s output will be represented by excerpts from Creation, Lord Nelson Mass, Paukenmesse, and the Surprise Symphony. Mendelssohn’s output will be represented by excerpts from Elijah, St. Paul, Psalm 42, and the Reformation Symphony. A German actor portraying the "Papa" Haydn will give tidbits about his life in music. Multi-media will also be utilized in the concert.

Music of the British Isles: Folk and Classical Music

Friday and Saturday, April 16 and 17, 2010, 7:30 PM, First Presbyterian Church, 5520 Kingwood Drive. America has a long relationship with Great Britain, and musical influences are strong.  Join the Kingwood Chorale as it takes a music tour through each of the British Isles, including folk song arrangements like “Barbara Allen” and “Danny Boy.  Utilizing the only pipe organ in the greater Kingwood area, organist Jay Whatley will perform English solo organ music (from Purcell to Britten). The chorale will also present short masterpieces from Thomas Tallis, William Byrd, Henry Purcell, Charles Villiers Stanford, Healy Willan, and Ralph Vaughan Williams. The Kingwood Chorale will finish the concert by presenting Benjamin Britten’s stirring Rejoice in the Lamb.
